Great work. I suspect that 'short term holders' is another way of saying 'market participants who have consumer debt'. I.e. Credit, student, auto or mortgage debt, are in bad financial positions so are more prone to gambling ( to buy their way out of debt ) & more prone to sudden sell off. While I will never get my hands on the actual numbers, I bet that this is the case.
